20’s Costumes

erin on Aug 26th 2009

Despite looking glamourous and hard to put together, a 20’s costume is actually one of the easiest ideas out there! I’m all about the last minute costume ideas and cheap ideas, so this is one of my favourites. So, if you want to be a 20’s flapper for Halloween, follow these easy steps:

flapperIf you have long hair, slick it back and put it into a low bun at the nape of your neck. You can accessorize with sparkly bobby pins or a vintage clip at the base of the bun. If your hair is short, use some gel and make finger waves. A glittery headband or feather is a good finishing touch.

Wear a slim fitting, sleeveless dress that falls around the knee. You can opt for a flapper costume outfit with fringe, or a plain coloured dress from the thrift store. You can either wear bare legs, or plain coloured stockings.

Shoes should fit with the era, either patent Mary Jane’s or other high heels with buckles.

For makeup, use light coloured foundation and powder for a pale look, and finish off with red lipstick. Accessories should be antique jewelry, especially a long, pearl necklace that hangs at least mid chest.

Michael Jackson Costumes

erin on Aug 23rd 2009

What do you want to bet that there will be a bunch of Michael Jackson costumes around this year? With his untimely death earlier this year and the controversy swirling around his doctor and family, it’s likely it will still be a hot topic come Halloween.

If you’re looking to go as the King of Pop this year, which Michael Jackson costume do you choose?

“Black or White” Video: This one is pretty simple to recreate: a white t-shirt, tight black pants that hit the ankle, and the signature Michael Jackson wig. Add the white or silver sequined glove as a finishing touch.

The Thriller/Beat It Michael Jackson Costume: Back in the 80’s Michael Jackson had the notable red jacket, decorated with zippers. This may be hard to recreate yourself, unless you luckily stumble upon one at the thrift store. Add tight black or red pants, boots with buckles and a Michael Jackson wig.

Pyjama Bottoms Michael Jackson: In some of his darker days Michael Jackson often left his home wearing pyjama bottoms. If you opt for this look, remember to wear a surgical mask to complete the ensemble.

The “Bad” video Michael Jackson Costume: Michael looked military with his black jacket covered with gold badges and shoulder epaulets. Don’t forget a gold belt with “Bad” written on it.

I can’t wait to see all the Michael Jackson costumes out this year. Which era will you choose?

Superhero Costumes

erin on Aug 21st 2009

Who hasn’t wanted to be a superhero for Halloween at some point in their lives? It’s an especially exciting time to dress up as a superhero as well, as we live in an age of amazing special effects and new big budget blockbusters coming out all the time. The hardest thing you’ll have to do is choose which superhero costume you want to go as.

Batman
With the release of the Dark Knight, Batman costumes are even hotter.

Mr. or Mrs. Incredible
This tight, red costume looks great on guys and girls, and is a perfect couples costume.

Wonder Woman
Always a classic! This is a sexy superhero costume that will have you turning heads.

Spiderman
Another favourite, especially with children.

The Incredible Hulk
The best Incredible Hulk costume I saw was a green inflatable version.

The Fantastic Four
Got three friends? You’ve got what it takes to be the Fantastic Four for Halloween.

The Watchmen
Go as The Comedian, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach, or Silk Spectre.

If spandex isn’t your thing, don’t fret. Choose a superhero costume with a long cape, or just ensure that your tights aren’t super tight! There are plenty of superhero costumes to go around, so pick one that you’re comfortable in so you don’t spend the entire evening worrying about your snugly-fitting ensemble.

Wizard of Oz: Scarecrow Costume

erin on Aug 19th 2009

If you want to go as the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, or the regular old farm version, you will need:

Overalls
Flannel or plaid shirt
Patches of fabric
Straw hat
Blush and eyeliner
Paper ribbon or streamers

To start, glue the patches onto your shirt and jeans. Take the paper ribbon or streamers, and stuff pieces up the bottom of your pant legs to look like straw. Glue to the inside of your legs and to your shirt so it will stay. You can poke it into a pocket as well. Take the black eyeliner and outline your eyes to look like triangles. Paint the inside with the red blush, lipstick, or Halloween makeup. Paint a red nose, and two red cheeks. Finally, paint a black smile on your face and paint your lips black. Make stitch mark lines by your lips.
