How to Create a Mad Hatter Costume
erin on Aug 1st 2009
Tim Burton is creating his take on the time honored classic Alice in Wonderland, with Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter. I’m guessing Alice and all the other characters in the story will be popular Halloween costumes.
What You’ll Need:
Tuxedo or suit
Top Hat
Red Wig
Cane
Pocket Watch
Colourful necktie or scarf.
1) In earlier films the suit has been black, with a white tuxedo shirt. In the Tim Burton version, Johnny Depp has an oversized, colourful necktie. You can find great suits at the thrift store, and you can go for black, purple or another rich colour.
2) The wig is what really defines the new Mad Hatter. It needs to be frizzy and red, and on top you can perch a tall top hat that matches the suit.
3) In the new movie, the Mad Hatter wears a bit of white makeup. If you’re trying to create the Mad Hatter costume, lightly cover your face with a little theatre makeup or foundation and light powder.
4) The shoes don’t need to be anything special, just shiny dress shoes or loafers.
5) Accessories really make the Mad Hatter costume. Find a gold costume pocket watch to attach to the suit. A black cane with a silver or gold top is the final touch.

Alice in Wonderland Costume

Actually, all the character’s costumes – Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, for example, will likely inspire many. As will Anne Hathaway’s White Queen (I almost like this one better than Alice)! An Alice in Wonderland costume is great because it’s so versatile – it can be an innocent kid’s costume, or a sexier adult costume. I even saw an Alice in Wonderland pet costume! Continue Reading »
