Top 5 Kids Costumes 2009

erin on Aug 4th 2009

It’s official! Ok, not really, but based on sales and user reviews, here are the top 5 kid’s costumes this year:

Optimus Prime Costume: This Transformers costume is flying off the shelves. Everybody loves the “robots in disguise.”

Wolverine Costume: We loved Hugh Jackman’s performance in Wolverine, and kids want to recreate it this Halloween.

Hannah Montana Costume: Miley’s built an empire with her Hannah Montana line of toys, clothes, beauty products and yes, costumes. Many tweens want to don the blonde Hannah Montana wig and go as Miley’s alter ego this year.

Twilight Costumes: With the release of the second Twilight movie earlier this year, there are a number of Twilight costume choices. Check out our Twilight costume ideas.

Harry Potter Costumes: The wizards are at it again, with Harry Potter #29. Okay, so it’s six at last count, but it seems like so many! If you’re a Harry Potter fan, go as Harry, Nymphadora, Snape, Dumbledore, or one of the many other characters for Halloween.

Oh, Baby: Toddler Costumes

erin on Jul 7th 2009

Frog BabyToddlers love dressing up in costumes, but it can be hard to choose one that your baby will be comfortable in. I’ve seen parents get frustrated when their little one is tugging at their baggy costume, or refusing to wear a hat. Toddlers are just starting to walk on their own, and can also be fiercely independent. So, keep this in mind before you buy an entire toddler costume.

Stay away from long costumes that could drag on the ground. Make sure that the costume fits well and is free from long laces or pieces of cloth that could get caught on anything. Remember that your child may stick something in his or her mouth, so check that there are no buttons or accessories on the toddler costume that could cause choking.

Your child will not deal with being uncomfortable or hot well. The costume can’t be too tight, and it has to be accessible for bathroom breaks or diaper changes. Realize that toddlers don’t usually tolerate masks or hats very well, and will probably keep ripping off any headpiece that you put on. Go for basic face paint instead.

Opt for a costume with breathable fabrics, so it doesn’t scratch or itch. Beware the cheapie costume as these are often made of low quality fabrics. Always bring a comfortable change of clothing if you’re going somewhere, in case your child hates the toddler costume or wants to change after a few hours.

Now that the safety stuff is out of the way, how about some top toddler costumes for 2009?

Toddler Cow Costume
Toddler Mermaid Costume
Child Hula Girl Costume
Disney Toddler Costumes – Pocahontas, Ariel, Cinderella, etc.
Toddler Dora or Toddler Diego Costume
Toddler Monkey Costume
Toddler Superman Costume

It can be tempting to make your toddler’s costume, but it can also be time consuming. Do you really want to put hours and money into a toddler costume that will be worn just once or twice? Renting is not really recommended for toddlers as they easily soil or rip costumes, and you’ll be on the hook for the damage. If the costume idea is fairly basic, it may be quite simple to do on your own: for example, a toddler princess costume could be made from a long nightgown, plastic tiara and magic wand.
