Pirate Costumes: Which Pirate Shall Ye Be?

erin on Aug 8th 2009

When it comes to pirate costumes, you don’t have to stick with your generic eye patch and striped shirt. Oh no, you can take your pick from a variety of cool pirate costumes for guys, girls, and kids.

Adult Pirate Costume: Ladies can go with a Renaissance look: a peasant blouse, a corset, and long skirt. Don’t forget the fake dagger, an eye patch and a bandanna to complete the look. For the guys, any sort of short, ripped trousers, flowing shirt and vest will do. It’s all about how you accessorize that makes the pirate costume unique: bring a bottle of rum, a treasure map, or have a fake parrot on your shoulder.

Jack Sparrow Costume: The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has become hugely successful, and Jack Sparrow is a popular pirate costume every Halloween. You’ll need a flowing white shirt, blue vest and belt with large buckle, as well as high boots and short black or brown pants. For headgear, you can either wear a tight black or burgundy bandanna, or the black pirate hat Jack Sparrow wore in some parts of the movie. The finishing touch is lots of black eyeliner and a long, black wig. If you opt for a true Jack Sparrow wig, it will come with the braids and beads.

Kids Pirate Costumes:It’s pretty cute to see little ones wearing children’s pirate costumes. If you’ve got an infant or toddler, a pirate costume is simple: dress them in any striped sleeper or jeans and white shirt. Add a bandanna, and draw a little moustache on – you probably want to skip the eye patch. If your children are older, you can buy one of the Disney-style pirate costumes, or quite easily make one out of thrift store garb, similar t the adult pirate costumes. Just make sure that if your kids are wearing an eye patch, they can see well enough to walk in the dark during trick or treating.
